Plant Genomics: Homoplasy Heaven in a Lycophyte Genome
نویسنده
چکیده
The recent genomic sequencing of Selaginella, a member of the lycophyte lineage of vascular plants, opens up all kinds of new opportunities to examine the patterns of evolutionary innovation and the creation of the basic bauplan of plants.

Selaginella Genome Analysis – Entering the “Homoplasy Heaven” of the MADS World
In flowering plants, arguably the most significant transcription factors regulating development are MADS-domain proteins, encoded by Type I and Type II MADS-box genes. Type II genes are divided into the MIKC(C) and MIKC* groups. In angiosperms, these types and groups play distinct roles in the development of female gametophytes, embryos, and seeds (Type I); vegetative and floral tissues in spor...
متن کاملA review of the prevalence, utility, and caveats of using chloroplast simple sequence repeats for studies of plant biology1
Microsatellites occur in all plant genomes and provide useful markers for studies of genetic diversity and structure. Chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSRs) are frequently targeted because they are more easily isolated than nuclear microsatellites. Here, we quantified the frequency and uses of cpSSRs based on a literature review of over 400 studies published 1995-2013. These markers are an import...
متن کاملBioinformatics Study and Investigation of the Expression Pattern of Several Important Genes Involved in Glycyrrhizin Synthesis of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. in Autumn and Spring Seasons
Glycyrrhiza is one of the important medicinal plants that is in danger of extinction. Search for finding accessions that have a higher glycyrrhizic acid is very important in breeding programs. Functional genomics methods such as EST sequencing prepare the ability to identify consensus gene families among studied species and interpretation of the genome. In this research, 55960 EST sequences of ...
متن کاملComparative Genomics of the Lipid-body-membrane Proteins Oleosin, Caleosin and Steroleosin in Magnoliophyte, Lycophyte and Bryophyte
Lipid bodies store oils in the form of triacylglycerols. Oleosin, caleosin and steroleosin are unique proteins localized on the surface of lipid bodies in seed plants. This study has identified genes encoding lipid body proteins oleosin, caleosin and steroleosin in the genomes of five plants: Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa, Populus trichocarpa, Selaginella moellendorffii and Physcomitrella ...

Genes carry instructions to make protein that affect body's cells and their physical activity. They also play an important role in the occurrence of various characteristics in the body. Recently, scientists in the new field of science known as genomics have studied the genetic instructions. Genomics deals with the discovery of all the sequences in the entire genome of organisms and is used to s...
